Pecchenino Description
The Pecchenino winery has always been at its core, a family business. Currently the winery is run by Orlando and Attilio Pecchenino, the grandchildren of Attilio Pecchenino. The first documentation of winemaking activity during the end of the 20th century, when the winery, managed by their grandfather Attilio, had little more than 8 hectares. In the 1970s, the reins of the winery passed into the hands of his son Marino and later, at the end of the 1980s in line with the generational changeover, his sons Orlando and Attilio took over the business. In 2017, Orlando's eldest daughter Lisa joined the company, historically heralding in the fourth generation of Pecchenino and more notably, the first female to be involved with the winery. And more recently, Lisa's sisters Gaia and Sofia, after completing their studies in languages and oenology, have also become an active part of the company.
Crafted from Nebbiolo vines cultivated from three vineyards in Monforte d'Alba, specifically the Bussia, Le Coste di Monforte and Ravera di Monforte MGAs, these vines undergo extreme care and attention leading to very low yields and, therefore, beautifully concentrated grapes. Diligent canopy management in July when the vines are thinned is followed by further thinning in August where the bottom half of the grape bunches are pruned. The final wine ages in large oak casks, integrating the rich Nebbiolo tannins while allowing the fresh fruit to show through.
Tasting Note: On the nose there are hints of plum, raspberry, ripe red and black cherry, blackberry, and liquorice. The palate is classic: rich and powerful with silky, well-integrated tannins.
Wine Pairing: Pair this wine with pasta with meat sauce, braised or roasted red meats, and aged cheeses.
Vinous: 93 Points
The 2020 Barolo San Giuseppe is redolent of dark cherry, gravel, incense, leather, game and dried herbs. Potent yet dynamic in the glass, the 2020 has a lot to offer. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so, its considerable power notwithstanding.
Wine Advocate: 90 Points
The Pecchenino 2020 Barolo San Giuseppe is an easy wine that is not particularly expressive in this vintage and shows standard aromas of dried fruit, cassis and iris root. I would recommend this bottle for near and medium-term drinking.
