VINEYARD
Bill (Blackmon) recalls his childhood playing with family friends in West Texas. In fact, he considered Eunice and Jacque Hunter as part of the family. Eunice was lifelong friends with Bill and Carol’s mother Mary Ruth. Eunice had admired Mary Ruth’s vineyard for some time, so much so, that one day in 1986, she called Mary Ruth and
told her she wanted Bill to plant her a vineyard like Mary Ruth had.
Bill obliged and soon planted a vineyard on Eunice’s land near Brownfield, which became Hunter Vineyard. In 1996, the same year he moved to the Hill Country, he added Merlot vines to the original Cabernet Sauvignon, and it’s this Merlot that is always featured in the Hunter blend.
While the majority of the Merlot for this blend will always come from the Hunter Vineyard, we also sourced small amounts from Paka and Bolen for this vintage. Likewise with the Malbec, which was sourced from Lost Draw, Gilliam Gap, and Bolen for this vintage.
VINTAGE
The 2017 vintage will probably go down as the best vintage of the decade. Plenty of dry, warm, sunny days and cool nights resulted in a textbook-perfect growing season.
WINEMAKING
The individual lots of wine were vinified separately with about 40% fermented in our second- and third-use oak fermenters. They were then blended together and aged for 22 months in 30% new French oak barrels.
