Torbreck - Woodcutters Semillon 2023 (750ml)
Semillon has always found a natural home in the Barossa. It was one of the early white wine grape varieties planted by the first settlers around 160 years ago and the Mediterranean climate and careful farming has created a heritage of old, low yielding Semillon vineyards. With the use of an age-old, robust, pink-skinned Madeira clone, found mainly in the Barossa, and maturation in both stainless steel and seasoned French barriques, the Woodcutter’s Semillon is reminiscent of the savoury, food friendly white wines found in the central and southern regions of France. It is not a typically lemony Semillon, showing more complex aromas of smoked almonds and honeysuckle as well as buttery textures from the natural malolactic fermentation.
Torbreck Description
The natural acidity and medium body of the Semillon grape takes great pride in the 100+ year old Barossa Valley vineyards that are naturally suited to the region. A wine that shows lifted aromas of fresh citrus fruits of kaffir lime grapefruit pith and tangerine balance by aromatic perfume of citrus flowers and infused candlewax. The palate is tangy with long acidity and cleansing to the finish. Enjoy as either a fresh young wine or age for up to 15 years to reveal brioche, lemon curd pastry like notes.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
The 2024 Woodcutter's Semillon is from a spectacular year in South Australia. It was warm and dry and everything good—"Goldilocks," in the words of winemaker Ian Hongell. On the back of the wet 2023 season, the soils were charged with moisture, and the growing year proceeded with calm and health. Everyone I met with so far, from both Barossa and McLaren Vale, has stars in their eyes about this vintage.
