Platt Vineyard Description
Platt Vineyard, is located on a Sonoma Coast ridge line just 6 miles from the Pacific—the same ridge line occupied by the Kistler family’s Occidental property and Bodega Thieriot vineyard (Littorai). Platt was named for Lewis Platt, the former Hewlett Packard CEO who bought the nearly 300-acre property in the early 2000s. He started planting vines in 2003, and today the site's 43 acre of vines are primarily planted to Pinot Noir (28 acres) with the rest Chardonnay. Platt Vineyard has an illustrious history as David Ramey [of Ramey] took all the Chardonnay right from the start. Ted Lemon [of Littorai] got the Pinot Noir and asked for certain clones to be planted. A couple more plantings went in in ‘07 and then Failla, Red Car, Sussman, Rivers-Marie and Radio-Coteau started taking fruit as well. In 2022, AXA Millésimes purchased Platt Vineyard. The existing grape customers kept their fruit for that season, but it's all staying in-house now, starting with the 2023 vintage.
The Estate bottling is blended from the lots that are the most open initially and captures the bright, radiant energy of the site. The Estate wine has a vivid, red and blue fruit driven palate, showcasing the aromatic and textural diversity achieved from blending different clones from different parts of the vineyard. There is fine detail, both savory and nervy in nature, with an array of lively fresh berries and coastal herbs.
Clones are: Pommard, 777 (Dijon), 828 (a Djion Pinot-Fin clone), and Swan.
Tasting Note: High toned, bright fresh fruits include wild strawberry, cherry, pomegranate, black raspberry and hibiscus. There is also tarragon, rose petal, orange zest, wet stone, clove nutmeg and damp earth providing plenty of complexity. This bottling highlights the pretty, coastal purity and refreshing acidity of the site. Detailed and lithe with fine tannins, this wine is already drinking well and will only get better in the coming years.
Vinous: 95 Points
The 2023 Pinot Noir (West Sonoma Coast) is another superb wine from this new estate. A blast of dark cherry/plum fruit, spice, menthol, licorice, incense, cloves, new leather and a kiss of French oak race across the palate. Crushed rose petal, mint, cinnamon, spice and cedar are nicely pushed forward.
