This Chardonnay is from blocks planted exclusively for Patz & Hall in 1997 and 1999 using the famous Hyde Wente selection of Chardonnay. The Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay is elegant, yet powerful and displays classic Hyde Vineyard traits of delicate white flowers, tangerine zest, and lemon cream. On the palate, the wine is citrus-driven with orange and lemon flavors along with hints of toasted almond and vanilla. Our Hyde Chardonnay white wine has great acidity that leaves a white chalk/mineral note on the very long finish. Hyde Vineyard has justifiably become one of the superstar vineyards in Carneros. Through many years of dedicated research, planting and winemaking, Larry Hyde has developed two of the most important grape selections in California: Hyde-Wente Chardonnay and Hyde-Calera Pinot Noir. Both are noted for extremely low yields, primarily due to the very small berry size within each cluster. The Chardonnay from Hyde is some of the most sought-after fruit in the pantheon of great California vineyards.
A stunning wine, with plenty of power and detail. Offers Fuji apple and crunchy star fruit, plus a whiff of smoked and salted butterscotch to complement the notes of peach preserves, black cardamom and nutmeg, along with a touch of lemongrass. Toasted brioche and a bite of buttery shortbread leave a lasting impression. Drink now through 2038. 1,186 cases made.
Patz & Hall Description
This Chardonnay is from blocks planted for Patz & Hall in 1997 and 1999 using the famous “Hyde Wente” selection of Chardonnay. The 2023 Hyde Chardonnay demonstrates why this vineyard has been a three-star, acclaimed Patz & Hall offering for over 30 years. The just ripe pomaceous fruit mingles seamlessly with the vanilla spice from careful new French oak ageing. Evidence of lees contact show by richness of palate and a nuance of toast and flint. This wine has wonderfully fresh acidity that is contrasted by startling deep, rich textures, a seeming contradiction, found in only the greatest Chardonnays.
