The 2022 SMD flows with black cherry, dried plum, fig, juicy black currant and cassis with pencil shavings, earth and spice before a hint of eucalyptus. With loganberry leading off, the palate also exhibits spice and mineral laden character with toast and herbed fruits and dried fruits with tobacco leaf and a note of balsamic on structured, jazzy and enlivening tannins.

The 2022 SMD opens shyly with dried cranberry and bay laurel before opening up into a core of dark fruit with black cherry and dried currant and then poppy seed vanilla pastry. A chunky palate with structure showing its mountain origins turns to juicy blackberry and plays off olive and smoked dried meats that come together with more time to breathe and develop.

Shows succulence -- atypical for the vintage -- as red currant and cherry notes ripple with underlying energy, while rooibos tea and iris flicker in the background.
