Emrich-Schönleber Description

“I'm not sure what I can write that I haven't written before. These are easily among the greatest dry Rieslings made in Germany from one of its most elite terroirs. In one way, it's just that simple. It's absurd to me to me how many serious, serious, German wine dorks I talk to who, when asked who they think is making the best dry Rieslings in Germany, say, without hesitation, "Emrich-Schönleber." Just as absurd is the number of tastings I've done - blind and not blind - where a Schönleber GG just wipes the table with everything else. And most of the people at the table, who know German wine, are not in the least bit surprised. All this is curious because, as you know, while the wines have a good market in the U.S., they do not fly off the shelf in the way that, for example, Keller does. They require some attention, some love, some work. But I guess that's what we're here for? As with the wines themselves, Schönleber's market presence is subtle, restrained, austere. We are the ones who must yell a bit. Please join us in digging deep for one of the greats. This level of quiet, meditative, perfection, should be championed - especially in a world as loud and distracted as ours is.”

I'll present the "Mosel Fine Wines" review below, even though I'm honestly truly at my wit's end with scoring wines. It's just so insulting and preposterous. Emrich-Schönleber's 2024 GGs are truly superb - they are EVERYTHING that someone who loves this style is looking for - look to 2004, 2008, 2016 as comparisons. But calm, inward-looking wines that demand time will never get high scores. So it goes.

"The 2024 Halenberg Riesling GG, as it is referred to on the central part of the label, offers a captivating and quite attractive nose of orange zest, minty herbs, licorice, lead pencil, black pepper, thyme, and pear. The wine proves still quite compact and intense on the palate, and develops an imposing, broad side as it unfolds. There is also some tartness in the long finish, which first needs integrating before true greatness comes through. The aftertaste is broad and a tad powerful. This is an impressive and impressively rich expression of dry Riesling in the making."  Mosel Fine Wines, No. 77, Sept, 2025

Vinous: 95 Points

The 2024 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs is from a site of Devonian slate. It opens with a smooth, creamy lemon tone. The palate has a beautiful roundness, with the heat of citrus that provides such a cooling, soothing energy that sinks deep into the soil. A lovely evenness defines this, despite all the brightness and stoniness.

(Bone-dry)

Wine Advocate: 93+ Points

The 2024 Halenberg GG has a fragrant nose with dense, very ripe fruit intertwined with notes of salt and rock. On the palate, the Halenberg is delicate, elegant and surprisingly light-footed yet compact and dry, with citrusy/racy acidity that makes it seem very lean at this early stage.
