Domaine Ostertag Description
If each generation leaves its mark on a domaine, André Ostertag’s on Domaine Ostertag can’t be underestimated. In the 1980s, after training in Burgundy, he returned to the family domaine his father built in the 1960s with renewed zeal: he lowered yields considerably, brought biodynamic viticulture to his fourteen hectares of vineyards, and sought nuance in terroir rather than the typicity of a grape variety. His subtle use of oak barriques, sourced from the Vosges Mountains, served to bring greater depth on the palate for varieties from the Pinot family. His pioneering approach helped to define new expressions of Alsatian wine for the entire region.
From the Alsatian “muench” meaning monk, this vineyard is named for the Cistercian monks who originally planted vines here in the 11th-12th centuries. In a south-facing amphitheater in Nothalten at the foot of the Vosges mountains, the Muenchberg site combines volcanic sediment and the pink sandstone of the Vosges with a touch of limestone. The vineyard offers definition, elegance, and great length and class to the Riesling (1.65 ha) and Pinot Gris (0.40 ha, aka A360P) planted here.

The 2022 Riesling Muenchberg Grand Cru spent 14 months in stainless steel. The 60+-year-old vines grow on Triassic sandstone with some volcanic elements from the nearby Ungersberg. The nose has a touch of pear, with an overtone of candied lime and melted stearin. The palate is concentrated and balanced, with freshness framing the flesh. This is smooth, tender, bright, clear-cut and precise. The 2022 is monolithic yet understated. Give it time.
