Clos du Mont-Olivet Description
The family estate of Clos du Mont-Olivet is the collector’s choice for traditional, aromatic and age-worthy southern Rhône blends. This multigenerational estate was one of the first wineries North Berkeley Imports partnered with in the south of France more than 25 years ago; since then, the estate has come to symbolize both what we seek out in winemakerpartners and importantly, what we hold true and dear in great wine. Always elegant, aromatic and long-lived, these wines reflect not only the rich character of southern Rhône terroir but also the subtle, spicy personalities of the region’s native grapes. Clos du Mont-Olivet is “one of the great estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape,” says the Wine Advocate.
Age of Vines: 30 to 100+ years
Tasting Note: Aromas of blackberry, licorice, cherry. Powerfully flavored yet elegant at the same time; more licorice and black cherry flavors, with baking spices. A wine to age.
Wine Pairing: Red meat; Moroccan lamb tagine
Vinous: 95 Points
Deep bright-rimmed ruby. Sexy, spice-accented aromas of raspberry, cherry liqueur, incense and succulent flowers, joined by a smoky mineral element that builds in the glass. Deep-pitched yet lively red and dark berry liqueur flavors stain the palate and display superb clarity and minerally lift. Finishes with impressive nerviness and thrust; silky tannins frame the wine's sweet fruit.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
Wine Enthusiast
The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Cuvee du Papet is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, with much of the Grenache being 100+ years old. It's dark and plummy but still marked by attractive florals on the nose. Full-bodied, creamy textured and plush, it's weighty and rich, with great richness and length on the finish. Remarkably, despite reaching 15.8% alcohol, it shows no heat on the palate.
