Capanna Description
Capanna, an illustrious winery in Italy, has been under the stewardship of the Cencioni family since 1957. Located in the Montosoli area north of Montalcino, Capanna was founded by Giuseppe Cencioni, and with help of his sons Benito and Franco, became one of the first farms established in the modern period of Brunello. They started bottling their own wines in the 1960’s and after Brunello di Montalcino was granted DOC status in 1966, Giuseppe became one of the 25 founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. In 1975, Capanna began exporting its renowned Brunello di Montalcino DOC, starting with the Capanna 1970 vintage.
The 66 hectare Capanna estate (27 ha under vine) remains a family-run operation, with both farming and winemaking processes managed by the Cencioni family. They also collaborate with esteemed oenologist Paolo Vagaggini to ensure the highest quality in their wines. The dedication and expertise of the Cencioni family have solidified Capanna's reputation as a producer of some of the finest Brunello di Montalcino wines available.
Tasting Note: Nose of black currant, plums cherries, with touches of carob and toasted dried fruit, with a nice trace of gardenia at the end. The mouthfeel has density and tension, with brackish tannins and the return of undergrowth and small fruits of
Vinous: 94 Points
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino bursts from the glass with a rich and intense display of crushed black cherries and plums complemented by cloves, olives and crushed stone. This is expansive on the palate, with silky textures and supple wild berry fruits underscored by saline minerals and brisk acidity. The 2019 finishes structured and full of zesty tension, leaving savory spices and a pleasantly bitter twang that pinches at the cheeks. There is so much pent-up energy here, yet also depth. Lose the 2019 in the cellar as it's a long-distance runner.
Wine Spectator: 93 Points
This luscious red is lively and well-defined, bursting with cherry, plum and floral aromas and flavors. The structure is firm, yet there's fine equilibrium overall, and the finish evokes green tea and almond accents.
