Bründlmayer's 2021 Chardonnay Reserve comes from the Steinberg vineyard, an undulating high plateau that adjoins the Steinmassl to the northwest. Consequently, the vines root in paragneiss/mica schist rock covered by a heterogeneous loess-clay layer, which can also be somewhat sandy from time to time. Fermented in 300-liter barrels and, after the malolactic fermentation, aged sur lie in large oak and stainless steel vats for up to 14 months, the intensely yellow-colored 2021 Reserve opens with a deep, pure and intense bouquet with almost iodine notes of ripe and concentrated fruits, fresh forest mushrooms, notes of wet forest floor and discreet flinty notes. Very elegant on the palate. this is an immediately tart, intense and lovely bitter-finishing Chardonnay in a style all of its own. The wine is rich and complex but also pure, tensioned and fresh, with a saline savoriness on the finish that gives it unique tension while preserving the coolish Kamptal character. A great Chardonnay that can compete with any of its kind, even from limestone terroirs.
