Brancaia Description
Brancaia is spread across three estates in Tuscany; two are located in Chianti Classico (in the subzones of Castellina and Radda) and another is located in the Maremma, along the Tuscan coast. Brancaia’s flagship wine - Il Blu - is a blend of fruit from the two Chianti estates, while their opulent Ilatraia bottling comes from Brancaia’s vineyards in the Maremma.
The winery was founded in 1981 in Castellina in Chianti by Swiss expats Bruno and Brigitte Widmer. They passed the winery on to their daughter, Barbara Widmer, who has also been the winemaker since 1998. Barbara has brought the estate consistent acclaim through powerful blends and principled winemaking.

The 2020 Il Blu is superb. Dark and mysterious at first, the Blu offers up an exotic mélange of blue fruits, mocha, new leather, licorice and lavender. Bright acids play off some of the more over leanings beautifully. Il Blu has long been one of the most distinctive wines in Chianti Classico. The 2020 is another fine edition of Il Blu, a wine I have followed since the 1990s.

Shows a resinous note from the oak that envelops ripe black cherry, plum, leather, mineral and tobacco flavors. This red just keeps building in intensity and fruit on the palate, ending with a succulent, fruit- and spice-infused aftertaste. Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.
